Voices of Courage: Honoring 30 Kurdish Women in Media on International Women’s Day, Kurdistan Region, Iraq, Erbil, 5 March 2026

Introduction
Across the world, journalism remains one of the most powerful forces shaping democracy, truth, and public dialogue. Yet the voices behind that work—especially those of women—often face immense barriers, from cultural limitations to political pressures. In the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, a new generation of courageous women journalists has emerged, shaping the narrative of their communities and ensuring that stories of resilience, governance, culture, and social transformation are heard.
In recognition of their vital contribution, more than thirty Kurdish women journalists will be honored with the Most Active Kurdish Woman Award 2026, an internationally recognized distinction celebrating their leadership and influence in the media landscape.
This international initiative is a collaborative effort between the Association of European Journalists (Greek Section), the International Rights Institute, and Artista Film Productions Philippines, bringing together organizations committed to media freedom, human rights, and global recognition of impactful professionals.
The ceremony will take place on March 8, 2026, in Erbil, the capital of the Kurdistan Region, at the Cristal Hotel Erbil, coinciding with the global celebration of International Women’s Day.
More than an awards ceremony, the event symbolizes solidarity among journalists, human rights advocates, and cultural institutions across continents—highlighting the transformative power of women in media.

The Organizations Behind the Initiative
Association of European Journalists: Defending Media Freedom
The Association of European Journalists (AEJ) has long stood as a champion for independent journalism across Europe and beyond. Serving as a bridge between national journalist communities and European institutions, the organization plays a critical role in safeguarding press freedom.
Among its key missions is the defense of media independence. The AEJ actively monitors threats against journalists and collaborates with international bodies such as the Council of Europe and UNESCO to protect the rights of reporters and news organizations.
Through its annual congresses, including the latest gathering held in Brussels in November 2025, the AEJ provides a platform for journalists and media experts to discuss emerging challenges such as disinformation, artificial intelligence in newsrooms, and evolving threats to journalistic integrity.
Advocacy is another pillar of the organization’s work. The AEJ actively engages with European institutions regarding legislation such as the European Media Freedom Act and anti-SLAPP directives, which are designed to shield journalists from legal harassment and ensure the protection of investigative reporting.
By partnering with international institutions in Kurdistan, the AEJ continues its long-standing mission of defending truth, transparency, and the voices of those who report it.

Artista Achievers Awards: Celebrating Humanity Through Excellence
The Artista Achievers Awards (AAA), founded by Filipino visionary Antonio Ma-at, operates on a unique philosophy: that artistry exists in every field where passion and purpose create meaningful impact.
While many award platforms focus on entertainment or celebrity culture, the Artista Achievers Awards redefine the term “artist.” For AAA, an artist is anyone who transforms their craft—whether in media, education, leadership, science, or humanitarian work—into a force for positive change.
The organization’s mission centers on honoring individuals whose creativity and dedication have shaped communities and inspired others. By recognizing professionals across industries, the initiative reminds society that excellence itself can be an art form.
Equally important is the platform’s vision of becoming a movement for humanity. Rather than existing merely as a ceremonial recognition, AAA seeks to document stories of courage, compassion, and innovation—ensuring that they inspire future generations.
Through partnerships with global organizations, AAA has expanded its reach beyond the Philippines, recognizing changemakers across continents. The recognition of Kurdish women journalists reflects this commitment to global inclusivity in artistry and leadership.

International Rights Institute: Advocating Justice and Human Dignity
The International Rights Institute (IRI) is an independent and neutral non-governmental organization dedicated to promoting human rights, justice, and social development worldwide.
With a strong focus on the Kurdistan Region, the institute works to strengthen legal frameworks, empower civil society, and support initiatives that uphold dignity, equality, and freedom.
Its vision is clear: a world where human rights are universally respected and every individual lives free from abuse, oppression, and injustice.
To achieve this goal, the institute engages in a variety of activities. It advocates for fair and impartial legal systems, conducts research and educational initiatives to prevent human rights violations, and collaborates with governments and international organizations to reinforce human rights frameworks.
Equally crucial is its mission to raise awareness. Through conferences, panels, and educational campaigns, the International Rights Institute promotes a culture of respect, inclusion, and accountability.
The recognition of Kurdish women journalists aligns perfectly with the institute’s broader mission: empowering voices that contribute to transparency, accountability, and democratic dialogue.

A Global Message of Empowerment
The recognition of Kurdish women journalists is more than a celebration of professional achievement—it is a powerful statement about the importance of representation, resilience, and voice.
Journalists often work at the frontlines of truth. For women in media, the challenge can be even greater, requiring courage not only to report the news but also to challenge societal norms and expand opportunities for future generations.
Through the collaboration of international organizations, this initiative demonstrates how global solidarity can amplify local voices.
By honoring these women, the organizers send a clear message: the work of journalists—especially those who uplift their communities—deserves global recognition.

The Kurdish women honored in Erbil represent a new generation of leaders in media—professionals who use storytelling, reporting, and broadcasting as tools for social progress.
Their work embodies the ideals of press freedom, human dignity, and creative excellence.
Through initiatives like the Most Active Kurdish Woman Award, international collaborations continue to remind the world that journalism is not merely a profession—it is a public service.
And when women lead that service with courage and integrity, the impact resonates far beyond borders.
